Brooklyn orthodontist reveals new trend: ‘Fantasy braces’ for older folks

Dr. Ted Rothstein reveals an up-and-coming trend in elderly “orthodontic patients” — staying young at heart by capitalizing on a teenage trend to get look-like “train-track” braces. These still young-at-heart are a group of older persons avid to fulfill a long-repressed desire to have braces for reasons unrelated to a crooked smile. AAO says new patient starts increased moderately in 2010

Patient starts by American Association of Orthodontists members increased by 4 percent per member in 2010 over 2008, according to the latest AAO Member & Patient Census Study. Conducted every two years, the study tracks such trends as patient starts, staffing concerns and referral patterns.
 The study showed that new patient starts increased moderately from 228 per member to 237 last year.

JONESBORO, AR, USA: The Jonesboro, Ark., charter of the national foundation Smile for a Lifetime (S4L) recently awarded its 100th orthodontic scholarship to Arkansas resident Luís Mazariegos. In less than three years, the Jonesboro chapter of S4L has awarded more than $600,000 in orthodontic scholarships to underserved children, changing lives one smile at a time.

The American Association of Orthodontists is partnering with the Ad Council and distinguished members of the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives coalition on a three-year oral health literacy campaign. 

The Ad Council, known for such iconic public service advertising campaigns as McGruff the Crime Dog’s “Take A Bite Out Of Crime,” will conduct a national campaign to improve children’s oral health.
